Thanksgiving is known as a time to be grateful for your friends and family, but the best part of this holiday is the tasty food. Many of your favorite Thanksgiving sides are invented by notorious women chefs. To celebrate the holiday season, here are 4 sides and their creators:
The first recorded recipe for Mac & Cheese was written by Elizabeth Raffald. In her popular 1769 cookbook, she describes the dish as “To Drefs Macaroni with Permafent Cheefe”. She’s also well known for running a cookery school, a catering business, and a retail store in England.
The first recorded recipe for Mashed Potatoes was written by Hannah Glasse. She was known for her famous cookbook “The Art of Cookery”, which even George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned a copy. In her 1747 cookbook, she called for butter, milk, salt, and potatoes to make the delicious side.
The first recorded recipe for Cranberry sauce was written by Amelia Simmons. In 1796, many believe her book “American Cookery” was the first American cookbook. In it, you can find many flavorful recipes including cranberry sauce.
The first recorded recipe for Green Bean Casserole was written by Dorcas Reilley. In 1955, she used common household food items to create the recipe in Campbells Test Kitchen. This simple dish became very popular during the holiday season because it was easy to make.
