Presidential Medal of Freedom Awardees

On Saturday, President Joe Biden awarded 19 people the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This medal is awarded to individuals who, according to the White House, have made, “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”  Out of the 19 amazing individuals, here are the four women who earned this medal:

  1. Hillary Clinton is an influential politician who advocated for many issues, including the expansion of healthcare. She served as a U.S. senator and secretary of state. Clinton made history by being the first woman nominated as a primary presidential candidate.

  1. Jane Goodall is a renowned primatologist and anthropologist. She spent years researching the behavior of chimpanzees, changing our understanding of these complex animals. Today, Goodall advocates for the preservation of our environment.

  1. Fannie Lou Hamer was a famous activist, who earned this medal posthumously. She advocated for voting rights and women's rights during the civil rights era. Hamer founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

  1. Anna Wintour is a fashion icon who brought fresh ideas to the world of fashion. She has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue for 36 years. Wintour has led the Met Gala Fundraiser for several years, which raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
