Let’s Take a Look into our Women Senators

Let’s take a look at the state of the US Senate following the 2024 election. About 25% of the Senate (25 of 100 Senators) is women. Although this is a welcome change from past Senates, where women had no voice, there is still much improvement to be made. Read to learn about these inspiring woman senators, their backgrounds, and their views on important issues!

The 2009-2011 US Senate convened in their Chamber within the US Capitol.


Maria Cantwell is Washington State’s Junior Democratic Senator. She is the second female senator of Washington, and before she ran for senate she was a member of the Washington House of Representatives and the US House of Representatives. Some of the issues she aimed to address with her candidacy were prescription drugs, gun control, and social security. 


Amy Klochubar is Minnesota’s Senior Democratic Senator. She began her career as a lawyer in Minnesota, and was Minnesota’s first elected woman senator. Klobuchar supports the pro-choice movement for women, LGBTQ rights, and the Affordable Care act. 


Elissa Slotkin is Michigan’s Democratic Senator. She was recently elected in the election of 2024, and will become the second woman in Michigan’s history to serve on the US senate. Slotkin is against the abolition of the death penalty, supports a buy-in Medicare option, and was a major sponsor of the 2020 Iran War Powers Resolution, which restricted president Trump’s ability to start a war with Iran. 


Tammy Baldwin is Wisconsin’s Junior Democratic Senator. She was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1999-2013, and co-founded the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. Baldwin opposes capital punishment in Wisconsin, and she has advocated for finding a resolution to climate change. She also aims to lower the price of prescription drugs, and voted in favor of sending $14 billion in military aid to Israel.


Kirsten Gillibrand is New York’s Junior Democratic Senator. She began her career as a lawyer at a private practice, then was elected to the US House of Representatives. Gillibrand was also a huge supporter of the #MeToo movement. She supports the legalization of cannabis, abortion rights for women, and Medicare-for-all.


Elizabeth Warren is Massachusetts’s Senior Democratic Senator. Before she served as a senator, she taught law at various universities and she was a member of the Congressional Oversight Panel. Warren has proposed a ‘wealth tax’ on the ultra-rich, a universal childcare system which would provide affordable childcare to working families, supports Medicare for all, and supports canceling student loans. 


Lisa Blunt Rochester is Delaware’s Democratic Senator. She was a member of congress, serving as a member of the House of Representatives before becoming a senator. Blunt Rochester supports the Affordable Care Act, and aims to reduce the cost of prescription drugs. She has also advocated for cleaner energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, women’s equal rights, and LGBTQ rights. 


Angela Alsobrooks is the recently elected Democratic Senator of Maryland. Prior to her role as a Senator, she was a State Attorney in Prince George’s County, then the county’s County Executive. As County Executive, some of her goals were to reduce violent crime, as well as reforming the justice system and improving education in her county. She worked to better housing affordability in Prince George’s County and increase access to affordable healthcare services across her county. 


Marsha Blackburn is Tennessee’s Republican Senator. Before this, she was a member of the House of Representatives, and also served on the Tennessee State Senate. She advocates for lower taxes and less government regulations, while she is opposed to the Affordable Care Act. Blackburn is a Pro-Life supporter,and works to reduce abortion access, as well as seeking out stricter policies on immigration. 


Jacky Rosen is Nevada’s Democratic Senator. She was a member of the House of Representatives prior to being a senator, and before this she was a businesswoman. Rosen is a supporter of the Affordable Care Act, and due to her background in the tech industry, she has advocated for innovation-boosting policies and addressing the US’s cybersecurity issues. She also supports women’s rights in equal pay as well as reproductive rights. 


Mazie Hirono is Hawaii’s Democratic Senator. She worked as a lawyer in private practices as well as as an attorney at the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, as well as serving as a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives. She was also a Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii and a member of the US House of Representatives. Hirono is also a supporter of protection of the Affordable Care Act, and immigration reform, making a pathway into acquiring citizenship for undocumented immigrants. She advocates for climate change policies and women’s rights/reproductive rights.
