Virginia Department of Health supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This ‘pink month’ is about raising awareness of the importance of attending regular prevention screenings and also to honor women who have been impacted by breast cancer.
In 1985, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was created by a collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the Imperial Chemical Industry to raise money for research to cure breast cancer.
Many women have been affected by this disease, either having breast cancer or have known someone who has had it. It’s so common that about 1-8 women are at risk of breast cancer.
Now that it’s the beginning of October, here are 3 ways you can support women by commemorating this month:
Wear a pink ribbon to symbolize breast cancer awareness
Donate money or fundraise for the National Breast Cancer Foundation
Participate in your local breast cancer awareness race/walk
