  1. Amelia Earhart 

Earhart is a household name, known for her goal of being the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. She was also a supporter of women’s rights and was a part in founding the organization ‘The Ninety-Nines’ which was for female aviators. She would be a great costume for any girl interested in aviation!

2. Ruth Bader Ginsburg 

Ginsburg was the second woman in history to serve on the Supreme Court. She fought for equality for all people, and was instrumental in the struggle for women’s rights. She led the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Program where she argued 5 Supreme Court cases which established equality in treatment of both men and women. She would be a great costume for girls interested in law.

3. Marie Antoinette 

Antionette was the wife of King Louis XVI, and she was the last queen before the French monarchy was overthrown. She led an extravagant lifestyle and loved fashion. She is known for saying ‘Let them eat cake’, however there is no evidence to prove that she actually said that. She would make a great costume for girls interested in fashion or France. 

4. Harriet Tubman

Tubman is celebrated as a fearless conductor of the Underground Railroad, where she led countless enslaved people to freedom. Tubman also served as a nurse and spy during the Civil War, which shows her incredible courage and commitment to justice. She would make a great costume for any girl who is interested in social justice and equality as well as history. 

5. Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc wass a peasant girl turned hero known for her role during the Hundred Years' War. She claimed to have divine visions, and she led French troops to several important victories, which changed the course of history. Though she was executed for her beliefs, Joan became a symbol of bravery and faith for girls all over. She would make a compelling costume choice for history enthusiasts.

6. Frida Kahlo

Kahlo was a Mexican artist celebrated for her self-portraits and exploration of her cultural and gender identity. She is known for her striking style, invocative of surrealism, as well as the traditional Mexican clothing she used in her paintings. Kahlo’s art reflect her resilience in the face of adversity and polio. Any girl interested in their Mexican heritage and art would appreciate her as a costume. 

7. Suffragettes

Suffragettes were women who fought for women’s right to vote in the early 20th century. They did this by organizing marches, protests, and hunger strikes to demand equality and representation in politics. Suffragette activists faced prison time but remained supporters of the cause in their pursuit of justice. Girls who dress as a suffragette pay homage to the spirit of these women who paved the way for us as the future generations.

Rosie the Riveter is a symbol of women’s empowerment during World War II. She represented the women who took on industrial jobs while men were away fighting in the war. Her iconic look as a strong woman in a polka-dot bandana has inspired later generations of girls to embrace strength and independence. Rosie would make a great costume for girls interested in history, specifically 20th century history. 

9. Mae Jemison 

Jemison made history as the first African American woman to travel in space. As an accomplished physician and engineer, in 1992, she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Throughout history, STEM has been a white and male dominated field. Girls who see Jemison succeeding in the field will be more likely to pursue their dreams of helping the world through STEM. Girls interested in becoming astronauts or scientists would love to dress as Mae Jemison for Halloween!

Sacajawea was a guide and interpreter during the Lewis and Clark Expedition of the territory gained in the Louisiana purchase. Her knowledge of the American land and languages helped the explorers navigate the unknown and uncharted territories of western America in the early 19th century. She is a symbol of strength and resourcefulness, and because of this, girls interested in embracing their Native American culture and history would benefit from dressing up as her.

Beyoncé’s influence in the music industry and her commitment to activism make her a perfect costume choice for fans of music and pop culture.

Taylor Swift is a singer-songwriter known for her skill in songwriting and her amazing ability to connect with her millions of fans through music. She started in country and seamlessly evolved into pop, as an example of someone able to cross genres flawlessly. She captivates audiences everywhere she goes with her heartfelt lyrics and dynamic performances. Swift is also an advocate for women’s rights, gay rights, and other social issues such as our presidential elections, making her an inspiration for aspiring musicians and fans of pop music, as well as a great costume!
